Born and raised in Waitara, Hon Carmel Sepuloni is of Samoan, Tongan and European New Zealand descent. A mother of two and the daughter of an emigrant, she has been an advocate for low socio-economic groups, Maori, Pacific, disabled and single parent families. In the 2020 Labour Government, the Honorable Sepuloni was appointed Minister for Social Development and Employment, Minister for ACC, Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage and Minister for Disability Affairs.
As New Zealand continues to navigate the pandemic, the Honorable Sepuloni, as Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage, is committed to supporting the sector to survive, adapt and thrive as part of her Government's broader economic response to COVID-19. She is also focused on building a vibrant and innovative cultural sector that not only values creatives, but supports them to have sustainable careers.
Hon. Sepuloni continues to seek opportunities to promote innovation in the sector and improve New Zealanders' access to and participation in arts and cultural experiences. Enriching New Zealand's culture and identity remains a key priority for Hon. Sepuloni as she champions arts, culture and heritage at home, in the Pacific and globally.
