Richard Demarco is Kingston University Professor Emeritus of European Cultural Studies. He is a watercolourist and teacher; co-founder of The Traverse Theatre Club in 1963; The Richard Demarco Gallery 1966; director of avant-garde art for Edinburgh International Festival 1967-1991. In 1972, he created 'Edinburgh Arts' as a university of all the arts. He introduced Joseph Beuys, Tadeusz Kantor, Paul Neagu and Marina Abramovic to the English-speaking world. He is the recipient of innumerable international awards from the governments of countries such as Germany, Italy, France, Poland and Romania, as well as Honorary Doctorates from British and European universities and colleges, and was appointed Commander of the British Empire in 2007. He was award a European Parliament 'Citizen of the Year 2013' medal for his work internationalising the art of Eastern Europe during the Cold War.
